How is Auto Design Award different from others?

[Kim, Song-Yi] The world most famous and honored industrial design awards include ‘iF Design Award’, ‘Red Dot Award’, and ‘IDEA(International Design Excellence Awards)’. Auto Design Award is differentiated among them, as it is the international design competition which solely for automobile design.

iF Design Award which has been held since 1953, is an international design challenge held every year. Usually, products are judged by its innovation, benefit to user and society, aesthetics, quality and materials.

IDEA has been held by Industrial Designers Society of America(IDSA) and Business Week since 1980. Winners will be selected based on innovation, benefit to client, society, and users.

Red Dot Design Award which has been held since 1955 is an annual industrial design challenge. Last year, over 4860 units of products from more than 61 countries were submitted, which shows Red Dot Design Award is the world biggest design challenge. Red Dot Design Award usually select winners based on its degree of innovation, functionality, durability, symbolic and emotional concept, and quality.

These three world-class design award open for all industrial products include car, vehicle components such as wheels, engines, lamps, airplane, bicycles, drones, navigation, scooters, products for kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms, watches, interior, materials, and even fashion area such as clothes, bags, and shoes.

Auto Design Award, unlike these three major design awards, is only for automobile design, which ultimately makes itself differentiated.

Auto Design Award Organizing Committee said “Before, car design award is usually held by a particular brand as an one-time event or people usually participate in the vehicle section of those three world-class industrial challenges that include not only cars but also airplane, yacht or bike. With the Auto Design Award, however, the first and only design award solely for car design, it is believed that it can help the car design industry improved and people who dream of being a car designer.”

Also, usually, those three world-class industrial design challenge targets products that has been on the market based on the award starting date. It means, most of participants are actual companies and professional designers who make real products for sale.

Auto Design Award targets only those unique car design sketches. Therefore, for those students and the public who are impossible to make real products, Auto Design Award can be an good opportunity.

Especially, there are three entries includes elementary school entry, middle and high school entry, and the general entry for undergraduate, graduate school students, and the public in Auto Design Award. It means, virtually, Anyone can participate and submit their works for Auto Design Award.

Participants of Auto Design Award can submit their work form April 1 to May 10. Participants can produce their works by any means like 3D rendering or hand sketch, as there is no regulation about using programs or devices.

Juries consist of professors from worldwide and the current car designers. Winners will be announce on May 20. Also, winners’ work will be exhibited at BEXCO, Busan during 2016 Busan International Motor Show.

Meanwhile, in terms of participation fee, Auto Design Award is free of charge while there is 350 euro to 750 dollars fees charged for participating three world-class design challenge.
