“The front of an automobile is its face.”

It is quite obvious that the front part of a car plays an important role.

This is as people perceive the car’s front as the representative image of the car, and the first impression of the vehicle is given through its front.

This is also a reason why automobile designers wants to put more aggressive and stronger image for the front.

European premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi have recently emphasized their brand identities through radiator grille.

It is quite natural to liken the car’s front to the human face or expression. In many case, we actually compare a car’s head lamps to human’s eyes and radiator grille to humans nose.

There are of course some differences, but some vehicles’ bumpers are thought as a ‘mouth’. Virtually, the car’s front does not look like any parts of the human face at all, but because of some reasons, we are used to it.

The car front consists of head lamps, radiator grille, and bumper, although they do not look like a human face, it sounds quite logical to compare them to the face. Balance, and the overall images ultimately come from the structure.

Here is a face size description picture. From it, it is found that two different images and expressions are made through reducing the size of eyes and mouth and resizing the distance between an eye and an eye.

Also, it is important to give a proper position to the proper factor. Here is an experiment that compares one that has emblem on its hood and one does not.

It is only a tiny little emblem, but it gives a completely different expressions of the front parts. The car in the left picture gives natural and complete image while the car in the right picture does not. This is because people are unconsciously and automatically trying to find a certain place to put their eyes.

At the car’s front, radiator grille plays the role, but there are another differences driven by the emblem. 1981 Benz’s 500SEC has a huge point on its center of the grille.

And this will make people put their eyes without any hesitation. Another example here. 1989 Lexus has smaller emblem, but it does not disrupt people from putting their eyes.

Instead of the emblem, the vertical stick placed at the center of the grille gives stronger images.

From this, the 2nd generation Equus and its radiator grille have a great charisma.

Audi’s A8, on the contrary, gives some calm images through the horizontal ribs and the large sized emblem on the center. The grille and the head lamps are sized properly as well.

Virtually, the big emblem on the grille or the vertical stick may perceive as a ‘common’ design.

But, as like human beings who look all different within the ‘common’ face structure-two eyes, one nose, and one mouth, the cars give all different images based on the ‘common’ designs.

Of course, there is no answer to judge the beauty. But in those uncountable beauties, they all have its own balance and its own beauty, and in this sense, the radiator grille and head lamps’ size and shapes play important role as like a human face.
