The future of Toyota found from ‘C-HR’

[Kim, Song-Yi] Toyota has recently revealed its compact crossover ‘C-HR’ at Geneva Motor Show 2016. C-HR, which realizes the concept car design, is definitely enough to catch people’s attention.

With the product quality, common design, and some convenient equipments, Toyota has successfully settled as a popular carmaker. Also, with its premium brand Lexus, Toyota has successfully entered to the premium vehicle market. Toyota, however, has a problem-a common but boring design. To solve it, Toyota had launched an independent brand called ‘Scion’, but its popularity did not last, and eventually was discontinued.

The turning point of Toyota’s design is faclifted Camry. It was almost an ‘adventure’. Wild but sensitive design is enough to appeal to young customers, and the peak of it is C-HR revealed at Geneva Motor Show 2016.

C-HR gets some innovative body silhouette and details. Especially, three dimensional feelings of the front fender and rear door have been emphasized through straight line, flat and curved surfaces.

Such design features like multiple layered design of the front bumper, rear bumper made with various materials, head lamps and rear lamps that emphasize some three-dimensional feeling can easily make the car look ugly, but Toyota challenged with the compact crossover.

Toyota is currently working on enhancing design and product quality through its TNGA platform. There are pros and cons of such Toyota’s radical design, but at least, it seems Toyota has been rid of its boring look.
