Dr. Kim, the head of judges of Auto Design Award said “The car design is..”

[Dailycar Song-yi Kim] “Anyone interested in car, loves car design, and dreams of being a car designer in the world can participate.”

Young-il Kim, a head of judging panel of Auto Design Award 2016 as well as a former chief designer and a president of design department of Hyundai Motors, said above on 28.

He said “It is hard to define a car design, but it should be scholastic, logical, and analytic. Especially, imagination and some emotions are needed.”

Kim evaluated European brands are strong in terms of car design, and Korea has been growing rapidly from the developing step to the finish stage.

-Give some explanations about Auto Design Award

▷Auto Design Award is a global car design competition which opens to everyone in the world. Korea is now one of the most powerful nations in the car industry, still there is not any clear car culture that exists. So, I hope Auto Design Award to be a trigger to promote the development of car culture.

Globally, there are some famous design competitions such as IF, IDEA or Red Dot, Auto Design Award is differentiated from them, as it is specialized in car design.

In this year, Auto Design Award has been operated under the theme of future car, but Auto Design Award Organizing Committee is planning to expand the award to cover all transportations such as bus, truck, motorcycle, tires, and even bicycle.

- Who is eligible for Auto Design Award and how to apply for it?

▷Entrants can submit their works by May 10 through uploading their works on our official website(www.autodesignaward.com).

Works should be 1500*1500(minimum) to 3000*3000px(maximum) sized JPG file within 2MB. Along with work explanation form, works should consist of three images that each contains front quarter view, side view, and rear quarter view. As works are submitted through online, no matter where the entrant lives, it is easy to participate in.

Auto Design Award opens to everyone. Winners will be announced on May 20 on the website.

-About judgment standard?

▷In terms of kids entry, imagination is the most important point. Teen entry will be judged by drawing ability with objective expression, and general entry is evaluated by aesthetic impression, innovations, and quality of design.

There will be 10 winners from general entry, 5 winners from teen entry, and 5 winners from kids entry. Those winners’ works will be exhibited at 2016 Busan International Motor Show which will be held from June 2.

Overall cash prize is 14,200,000 won(Korean currency). In terms of General entry, 5,000,000 won will be given for one grand prize winner. 3,000,000 won of cash prize is for one honor award winner, and eight participation prize winners will receive 500,000 won per each. In terms of Teen entry winners, there is one grand prize winner who will receive 500,000 won. Also, one honor award winner will get 300,000 won, and three participation winners will receive 200,000 won per each. In terms of Kid entry, 300,000 won will be given for one grand prize winner, 200,000 won will be given for one honor award winner, and three participation winners will win 100,000 won of cash prize respectively.

Also, additional three winners of Renault-Samsung, Infiniti, Kia and Busan Mayor prizes will be chosen, and all winners will be invited to the automobile design seminar held on June 3 at 2016 BIMOS.

- Judging panel is also an important point to see. How Auto Design Award judging panel consists of?

▷The judging panel consists of 10 professional experts from car industry, research and academic field.

From car industry, Myung-hack Lee, a senior executive of the design department of Ssangyong Motors, Joo-wan Sung, a chief designer and general manager of Renault Design Asia, Jung-yong Lee, a CEO of Saean Motors, Tae-sun Yoon, a marketing insight managing director from Consumer Insight, Eun-tae Kim, a general secretary and executive director from The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers will take charge of examiners.

From the academic world, Chul-ho Kim, a professor in the department of automobile engineering of Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Sang Koo, a professor in the department of automobile transportation design of Kookmin University, Jong-min Cha, a professor in the department of transportation design of Hongik University, and Bum-suk Lim, a professor of Art Center College of Design(ACCD) take charge of judges.

-Can Auto Design Award affect the development of Korean car industry?

▷As Auto Design Award is not only for Korean but also for people around the world, Auto Design Award can be established as the gateway to becoming a car designer. In the future, Auto Design Award Organizing Committee is planning to exhibit winners’ works in Frankfurt Motor Show, Paris Motor Show, Detroit Motor Show or in Beijing to introduce our culture.

I believe that as time goes by, Auto Design Award would give some huge impacts on the development of domestic car industry as well as of the global market.

Dr. Kim who currently is a chairman & CEO at EL B&T, studied production design in Wuppertal University in Germany and holds both bachelor and master’s degree. He worked in Germany and the U.K., experienced design and production. After he came back to Korea, He served as Chief Designer at Ssang-yong Motor Company designing Chairman, Korando, Musso and numerous vehicles.

Later, He held various positions of increasing responsibility under the Hyundai Motor Group umbrella, including Chief Precision, Chief Designer & Senior Vice President at Hyundai & Kia Design Center, and Executive Vice President in Marketing for Brand & Design Differentiation in Hyundai and Kia Motors. From 2007 through March 2009, Dr. Kim was CEO and President of Innocean Corp., a leading Marketing Communication Company of the Hyundai and Kia Group. He designed major vehicles of Hyundai and Kia such as NF Sonata, TG Grandeur, Genesis, Tucson, and XD Avante. He now has been evaluated as one of the most powerful car designers.
